Building Renovation

The J.V. Fletcher Library is in the midst of a major expansion and renovation project, slated to be completed in early 2027. The Friends are committed to supporting this project.

Construction began in May 2025, and a groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 23rd. Visit the Friends Features blog to read about the celebration.

While the building is under construction, the library is open at its temporary location at 515 Groton Road, near Ace Hardware.

Visit the Library’s website for updates and additional details.

The Friends’ Foundation

Throughout the building project, the Friends will continue to fundraise through our usual channels in order to pay for the programs and initiatives our patrons enjoy. However, we have also established a separate entity to raise money specifically for the renovation. This entity, a subset of the Friends, is known as the Foundation

Funds raised by the Foundation will be used primarily to furnish the new building.

For additional information, and to make a donation, visit the Foundation’s website.

1,000 Homes Campaign

The Friends’ Foundation is asking 1,000 homes here in Westford to donate $1,000 – either all at once or over three years – to raise $1,000,000 to offset the overall cost of the renovated, expanded library.

The Numbers

The total cost of the building project is $33 million. The majority of the funding comes from two sources:

  • a nearly $8.6 million construction grant awarded in 2022 by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC)

  • approximately $23 million from the Town of Westford, through a debt exclusion approved by residents in 2022

The Friends, through their Foundation, have been tasked with raising the additional $1.5 million.
